Bacon Avocado Burger
Turn burger night into a gourmet experience with this Bacon Avocado Burger. The cilantro mayo is what takes it to the next level!
Avocado Burgers are where it’s at!
Hamburgers made at home don’t have to be just sad patties topped with a Kraft cheese single (but honestly, that’s the way I grew up eating them).
If you like restaurant-style burgers with creative toppings and flavorful sauces (think Red Robin), this Avocado Burger recipe will delight your taste buds.
The cilantro mayo especially is what sets this recipe apart from others. It combines with the avocado to make a flavorful bite that guacamole lovers will appreciate.
Why you’ll love this Avocado Burger Recipe
- Comes together in less than 30 minutes, easily!
- Big restaurant-quality flavor, made at home with everyday ingredients.
- Easy to customize with the toppings you like best.
Bacon Avocado Burger ingredients
- ground beef – the foundation of this burger! But if you’d like to use ground turkey instead, you can. Use my turkey burgers recipe and then add the toppings from the recipe below.
- avocado – you’ll need two ripe avocados that have been peeled, pitted and mashed.
- pepper jack cheese – I love this type of cheese for adding a little spicy kick, but if you don’t like spice, you can use Colby Jack for this burger with avocado.
- hamburger buns – I like to use brioche hamburger buns because they have a rich buttery taste and a restaurant quality to them. I buy them, but if you want to try making homemade brioche buns, you can!
- bacon – make a batch of bacon in the oven to add a crispy and flavorful crunch to this burger! You can also make turkey bacon in oven for this, if you prefer.
- lettuce – I like to use green leaf lettuce to add a refreshing texture and flavor to this avocado burger recipe.
- tomato – a sliced Roma tomato adds a juicy and tangy component.
- pickled jalapenos – an optional addition for those who love heat. See my post about how to pickle jalapenos or buy a jar.
- mayonnaise – the base of the cilantro mayo, this will add creaminess to the burger.
- cilantro – adding chopped fresh cilantro to the mayo is the zesty twist to these bacon avocado burgers!
- garlic powder – adds just a subtle hint of savory garlic flavor to the mayo.
- salt and pepper – for seasoning both the burger itself and the cilantro mayo.
How to make an Avocado Burger
- Make the cilantro mayo and refrigerate it until you’re ready to assemble the burgers.
- Preheat your grill and then form the beef into hamburger patties and season them with salt and pepper.
- Grill the burgers until they are medium-rare, adding the cheese during the last minute of cooking so it gets nice and melty.
- Toast the buns, if you want.
- Spread the cilantro mayo and the mashed avocado onto the buns.
- Put the burgers on the buns, and then top them with the bacon, lettuce, tomato and the jalapenos, if you’re using them. Enjoy!
Home Chef Tips for this Avocado Bacon Burger
- For a juicier burger, choose a ground beef with a slightly higher fat content than the leanest options. For burgers, I prefer ground round, which is 85% lean / 15% fat.
- Customize the spice level by adding extra pickled jalapenos, or even sliced fresh jalapenos.
- Hate cilantro? Feel free to use basil instead, or just use plain mayo!
How to serve a Burger with Avocado
This Avocado Bacon Burger is so epic, it’s ALMOST a complete meal on its own. But it also pairs really well with side dishes like elote corn salad and bacon potato salad.
You will definitely need an ice cold beverage, and I recommend a lemon shandy or basil lemonade.
Avocado Burger Recipe storage
If you happen to have leftover burger patties, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Store all toppings separately. Avocados are best mashed just before eating.
Reheat the burgers in the microwave and assemble just before serving.
Avocado Bacon Burger FAQs
While there are no official definitions, California burgers typically include light and fresh toppings like avocado and sprouts. Traditional burgers are often made with toppings like bacon, ketchup, mustard, pickles and onions. This Avocado Bacon Burger pulls ingredients from each style.
It’s best to use avocado as a topping for a burger rather than try to blend mashed avocado in the burger patty itself, which may cause the avocado burgers to fall apart.

Ooh, Lori, you really got me with this one. I just got some Criollo beef (don’t worry if you’ve never heard of it – it’s a desert thing), and was going to make plain hamburgers, so we could really get the flavor of the beef (it’s new to us). But adding avocado and cilantro mayo… absolute genius, in my opinion. I would probably add a bit of lime juice to the mayo because I’ve done that before and like it that way. Would also use colby/jack cheese, because we don’t go for heat any more. How could anyone go wrong with this combination??? Even though I want to taste my new meat, I’m not thrilled with totally plain burgers, so the idea of adding some of my favorite ingredients makes me very happy.
Hi Susan! I must say, this was the BEST burger I’ve had in a very long time. I think it was the cilantro mayo more than anything. Colby Jack cheese would work great.
