The best Bourbon Smash Cocktail

You might have noticed that we love bourbon cocktails around here. From an apple cider old fashioned to a bourbon mule, this liquor is for much more than just sipping on the rocks.

Today, I’m sharing my favorite Bourbon Smash recipe – a timeless cocktail that is all about the balance of sweet, sour, strong and sippable.

I’ll give you directions for how to make it the classic way, as well as ways to make it your own using ingredient variations like Meyer lemons and vanilla.

If the name of this blog didn’t already give it away, OF COURSE I have a drawer in my fridge that’s always filled with lemons.

They’re cheap and plentiful and are as perfect for making something sweet like lemon curd cake as they are for making something savory like creamy feta dressing or Greek yogurt mashed potatoes.

My drawer full of lemons always means that homemade margaritas to go along with Sonoran hot dogs don’t have to be a “great, now we have to go buy 20 limes” situation.

It’s more like a “let’s have margaritas because we have a few lemons” situation.

Side note – don’t you hate it when you get those dud limes? Like, the ones that have hardly any juice and are all mealy inside? Seems like I ONLY get those when I want to make margs or basil cocktails and really really need juicy ones instead.

Well, we don’t ever need to worry about dud limes again because we have lemon margaritas!

In my house, cocktails are just as seasonal as meals. Summers are spent sipping lemon margaritas and tequila mojitos on the front porch, and winters are endured snuggled up on the couch with a hot caramel coffee or brandy old fashioned.

As we transition from summer to fall (or as I like to call it, Halloween food season) here in Michigan, I wanted to create a cocktail that will take us from one season right into the next. It’s a little lighter and brighter than my bourbon apple cider, which I reserve for the cold, snowy days.

I love the bright flavor of a classic Moscow mule, or even my bourbon mule recipe or a strawberry Moscow mule in the summer. And of course, when I think of autumn, caramel apples are one of the first things that comes to mind. Why not a fall Moscow mule?

So, I present you with this Caramel Apple Cider Mule. Serve with an autumn butter board for maximum deliciousness.

I know, this is my second blood orange recipe this week. ‘Tis the season, or so they say. I even used blood oranges to make orange ginger chicken last week.

You know what it’s also the season for? Food and drink for the big game!

It’s not until next month, but it’ll be here before we know it. I’m actually traveling for a photography workshop between now and then, so I want to get my game day menu tested and set in advance. Such a dork.
