Vanilla Creme Brûlée is timeless!

Sometimes, you just can’t improve on a classic. Once in awhile, I love a modern restaurant dessert with unexpected ingredients and preparations.

But truly, is there anything better than an amazing dish of creme brulee? The rich custard paired with the crackly torched sugar top is irresistible, in my opinion.

What’s funny is that I’ve published more “creative” creme brulee flavors like grapefruit creme brulee and coconut creme brulee and even Christmas creme brulee.

But oddly, I’ve never published the most traditional version ever. The kind I was taught to make my first week of culinary school.

So today, I’m sharing my perfect recipe for vanilla bean creme brulee. It will never go out of style!

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, Jeff and I don’t take it too seriously. We *maybe* get each other cards, if we remember. But if somebody forgets, there’s no hard feelings.

I can’t remember the last time we got each other gifts, although one time Jeff did stop at a flower shop and buy me discounted flowers that WERE LEFT OVER FROM A FUNERAL (true story). Ah, romance.

So it should come as no surprise that we also usually avoid restaurant meals, figuring we can go out to eat (and get better service and not a stupid prix fixe menu) any other day of the year.

We usually just consider the day an excuse to cook something more delicious for dinner than usual, like salmon pasta made with sockeye salmon, or lasagna cottage cheese.

Or sometimes even just a board filled with Valentine’s Day snacks and a couple of rosemary cocktails is all we need for “dinner”.

And if we want something sweet but ridiculously easy, I’ll make something like these Valentine’s dessert shooters.

As I mentioned yesterday, my Thanksgiving Salad and Thanksgiving Fruit Salad recipes have become among the most popular content on this site.

So, I also created a salad for Christmas and Easter salad, and I’m back today with a Christmas Fruit Salad, too. Fruit salad may or may not be something that has a spot on your holiday table, and that’s OK.

I think it’s a nice addition to a meal for a large crowd, especially if lots of kids are in attendance. Even if they won’t eat anything else on their plate, you can usually get a kid to eat a scoop of fruit salad (especially when it’s served in an adorable jar like my Easter fruit salad).

But this holiday fruit salad is delicious for taste buds of all ages. The sweet fruit is balanced with a dressing made with fresh orange juice, honey and seasonal spices. Serve it arranged as a Christmas tree or simply tossed together.

It’s also great as a Christmas breakfast fruit salad or a Christmas brunch fruit salad as part of a brunch buffet.

My summer is certainly shaping up to be better than the last one, and I hope that’s true for you, too! More fun, more safe gatherings, more enjoying every second!

Everybody who knows me well knows that the 4th of July is my favorite holiday. It’s nice weather and low commitment. There’s no customary big meal to prepare and no presents to buy. It’s just pure relaxation and enjoyment.

I don’t deny it: I am unabashedly a homebody. If I have a choice between going out and cozying up at home with Valentine’s Day Snacks and a chocolate brownie pie, or homemade waffles and ice cream, well, the “out” thing better be really good.

And when it comes to Valentine’s Day, I can’t remember the last time Jeff and I even tried to go out. The truth is, we both enjoying cooking, and we’re pretty good at it.

So, the meal we make at home is almost sure to better than any V-Day prix fixe menu out there. And sometimes we’ll just pick one of my charcuterie ideas and have that for dinner.

But really, we just like being together, and most of our life’s special moments are spent at home.

I’ve been sharing a little bit about about my husband and I’s recent 10th anniversary trip to Maui on my Instagram account. It was an amazing trip, with lots of relaxation, snorkeling, golf (for him), shave ice (for me), driving around the island and beach hopping.

We also tried açaí bowls for the first time, and fell in love with them.

An açaí bowl is basically just a smoothie in a bowl, topped with stuff. The smoothie should, of course, contain açaí berries (usually in a dried powder form blended into the smoothie).

Açaí is a South American fruit that is considered a superfood thanks to it’s crazy amount of antioxidants and other nutritional benefits.

What’s going on at your local farmer’s market? Mine has been crazy lately! ALL of the good stuff is in season right now, which is awesome. I usually just take two reusable bags with me, and when those are full, I’m done.

But lately, I’ve felt like I’ve need a wheeled cart or wagon or something, because my eyes are bigger than what my arms can carry.
