Blistered Shishito Peppers and Dipping Sauce are a summer treat that can be served as a snack or side dish. Stir up the sweet, sour, salty and savory condiment in just a minute.

Round white plate filled with blistered shishito peppers and a small fluted white bowl of creamy light orange sauce with red pepper flakes sprinkled on top.

The possibilities are endless with Blistered Shishitos

One of my favorite things to grow in my garden is shishito peppers. I buy seedlings from a garden center for just $2 or $3 each, and plant them in pots on my deck.

Just like jalapeno plants (which I always turn into pickled jalapenos – see my post about how to pickle jalapenos), they need very little care other than plenty of sun and watering.

These easy plants are prolific once they start getting going. Usually by mid-July, we can harvest peppers from them every few days.

These mild peppers are one of my daughter’s favorite foods, so the more we can get, the better!

Sometimes we’ll have so many peppers that we’ll include them in a batch of fajita veggie and serve them with my shrimp fajitas recipe.

But most of the time, we simply blister them in a pan and sprinkle them with salt. We’ll often eat them just like that, but occasionally we’ll make this shishito peppers dipping sauce.

These + a smoked salmon pizza is all I want to eat for dinner in the summer! Shishitos are also one of my very favorite side dishes for ribs.

With flavors inspired by nuoc cham (a Vietnamese condiment), this creamy dipping sauce for shishito peppers is sweet, sour, salty and savory.

These Asian-inspired Wonton Nachos are a fresh and delicious twist on classic nachos. With lots of elements you can prep in advance, simply crisp up some wonton chips, pile these nachos high, and watch them disappear!

A large slate blue platter filled with wonton nachos, with small bowls of garnishes like herbs and pickled veggies alongside.

My family is still doing mostly carryout for restaurant meals these days. We eat on outdoor restaurant patios when the weather is warmer, but since we live in the Midwest, it’s takeout throughout the winter.

And I can’t say that I’m not sick of it. I am!

While some food is fine for carryout, like maybe lasagna cottage cheese or beef stroganoff from our favorite local hole in the wall, other food just does NOT carry out well. Particularly anything where the crispiness is really at it’s peak straight out of the fryer, like fried chicken.

And don’t even get me started on carryout brunch of any kind. I’ll stay home and make my own vegetable quiche, bacon in the oven and bloody mary with an epic garnish for a bloody mary, thanks.

But probably my least favorite dish to attempt to do carryout for is nachos. Nobody wants soggy chips, and they certainly don’t survive the trip home.

So, I’ve been making nachos of all kinds at home, where we can enjoy them fresh out of the oven, immediately.

We’ll do the classic ground beef/cheese/lettuce/tomato/tortilla chips variety quite often, or sometimes make them topped with my fajita vegetables recipe, but once in awhile we change it up and get creative.

These Wonton Nachos are inspired by the flavors of a pork banh mi sandwich, but turned into a crispy, crunchy plate of finger food.

Spicy Pork & Mustard Green Soup from Bon Appetit January 2014 | foxeslovelemons.com

In this monthly series, I commit to cooking whatever is on the cover of Bon Appetit, Saveur or maybe some other food magazine. There’s a reason these particular dishes are on the cover – they’re usually the best recipes in the magazine.

Well, it’s time to Cook The Cover again. As expected, the January issues of all of the food mags focused on healthy eating, and Bon Appetit had the most appetizing (pun intended) recipe on the cover.

I’m a sucker for a good Asian soup, especially if it includes noodles. Especially if it claims to be spicy.
