I’ll give you directions for how to make it the classic way, as well as ways to make it your own using ingredient variations like Meyer lemons and vanilla.

Apple Cider Old Fashioned

It’s fall here in Michigan, which means one thing – apple season! Today, I’m sharing an apple cider version of my favorite cocktail – the old fashioned.

This apple cider bourbon cocktail recipe incorporates the classic elements of an old fashioned – bitters, orange peel and bourbon, but with a few unique twists.

Instead of the traditional sugar cube that’s usually muddled with the orange peel to add sweetness, I am using maple syrup to sweeten this apple cider old fashioned!

Most old fashioneds do not have any sort of “mixer” added to them – they are, essentially, bourbon over ice, with a little bit of sugar and bitters. While I love them the classic way, I will admit that sometimes, it’s a little strong for me.

So, topping this old fashioned off with apple cider makes it a little more of an easy drinking cocktail.

A well-made bourbon sour (or bourbon smash drink) is a refreshing joy to drink. Made with bourbon and a generous amount of simple syrup and lemon juice, it’s sweet while still being well, sour.

Weird little tidbit about me – I worked at Applebee’s in the early 2000’s. Let’s just say it was the heyday of bourbon glazed . . . everything.

Bourbon glazed steaks! Ribs with bourbon bbq sauce! Bourbon glazed chicken (which I would normally order for my shift meal, along with mashed potatoes and veggies). And I’m pretty sure there was even a bourbon glazed salmon on the menu.

It’s been MANY years since I’ve thought about that job or had any desire to bourbon glaze anything. But you know me. I’m always looking for new salmon recipes.

From salmon pasta to pineapple salmon, we have this versatile fish at least once a week.

If you’re the cook for Thanksgiving dinner, what is your favorite part of the preparation – the turkey (or perhaps the baked ham with pineapple sauce), the sides, or dessert?

While I’m pretty useless when it comes to dessert except for the occasional cranberry curd pie, it’s such a tough call between the other two for me.

I love the sides because you can get really creative and have a lot of variety, everything from classics like classic stuffing recipe to something kind of oddball like my crock pot green bean casserole recipe or Thanksgiving rice or chorizo stuffing.

But I also really dig the simplicity of roasting a turkey, carving it, and putting together a beautiful turkey platter for presentation, complete with my favorite turkey glaze recipe.

Today, I’m going to share the method I use for the best roasted turkey, the maple bourbon glaze I brush it with for extra flavor, and tips to make the most gorgeous turkey platter of your life.

To make this Bourbon Apple Cider Punch, start by grabbing a carton of local apple cider. The best apple cider comes from Michigan apples, and no, I’m not at all biased. It’s also great in apple cider mules.

You’ll also need a bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine. If you want to keep it in Michigan, several Michigan wineries make sparkling wine!

I’ll remember 2015 for many reasons. Lots of new nephews were born this year. We bought a new house this year. We renovated the house’s kitchen this year. And, I cooked a faux Thanksgiving dinner in an Airbnb this year.

If you’ve been following the #FLLdreamkitchen hashtag on Instagram, you’re aware that the most recent step in the renovation was refinishing the floors throughout the majority of our first floor.

The floors needed to be patched where the wall between the kitchen and dining room used to stand, and until they were refinished, you’d always be able to see the patch job.

So, last week seemed as good of time as any to ship out and just get the refinishing done with.
